So You Want to See Lava

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

The big island of Hawaii is home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, featuring Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

This fact has made Hawaii Volcanoes National Park one of the top travel destinations in the state, attracting visitors from around the world hoping to see Kilauea in action.

In the past, Kilauea was in a continuous state of eruption with lava flowing steadily down the mountainside and into the ocean. Seeing lava back then was a sure thing.

The current eruption is very different than eruptions of the past. It has periods of activity followed by periods of inactivity. And rather than lava flows this eruption is producing lava fountains. Recent fountains have measured over 1500 feet high - that’s a 100 -150 story building! So, if you happen to go to the park at the right time, you are sure to see something extraordinary… something you will not soon forget.

HOW TO VISIT HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

To visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you have the option of going on your own (if you have a rental car and don’t mind driving - it’s a 2-3 hour drive from Kona, and the park entry fee is currently $30 per vehicle).

Or you can take a guided tour. In addition to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, guided tours include other points of interest. Most will also visit a working Kona coffee farm, a black sand beach, and a waterfall or two.
